How is GPA calculated?
GPA stands for grade point average. Each letter grade has a point value. You multiply the points by the course credits to get quality points, add all quality points together and divide by total credits.
Formula: GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours
Standard 4.0 grade scale
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A- | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C- | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ / D | 1.3 / 1.0 |
| B- | 2.7 | F | 0.0 |
Example
A 3-credit A (12 points) plus a 4-credit B (12 points) gives 24 quality points across 7 credits, so GPA = 24 ÷ 7 = 3.43.
Weighted vs unweighted GPA
This calculator uses the common unweighted 4.0 scale. Some schools add an extra point for honors or AP classes, and some universities use different plus and minus values, so always confirm with your registrar. Plan your study time with the study planner and count essay length with the word counter.
